How to Generate a Password That Actually Holds Up

Most passwords people create follow patterns that are easy to guess. Here's how to generate one that doesn't — and how to handle sites that make it harder than it should be.

The Problem With Passwords You Create Yourself

When most people create a password, they start with something familiar — a name, a date, a word — and then modify it. Add a capital letter. Throw a number on the end. Maybe swap an "o" for a zero.

It feels creative. It isn't. Those patterns are so predictable that attackers build them directly into the tools they use to crack passwords. "Password1!" fails in seconds. So does "M@rch2019" and "fluffy#1".

The only password that's genuinely hard to crack is one with no pattern at all — one that was never invented, just generated. What Makes a Password Strong

Two things determine how hard a password is to crack: length and randomness.

Length matters more than most people realize. Every character you add multiplies the number of possible combinations an attacker has to try. A 12-character password isn't twice as hard to crack as a 6-character one — it's astronomically harder.

Randomness matters because patterns are weaknesses. If your password is based on anything meaningful to you — or follows any rule a human would naturally apply — it's less random than it looks. True randomness means no word, no date, no substitution, no pattern. Just characters chosen without any logic a person would recognize.

Length beats complexity. A random 14-character password using only letters is stronger than an 8-character password with symbols. Go longer first, then add character variety.

The Complication Nobody Talks About

Here's the real-world problem with strong passwords: the site you're creating one for may not accept it.

Some sites cap passwords at 10 or 12 characters. Some ban symbols entirely. Some allow only letters and numbers. Some restrict which symbols are valid. These limitations are frustrating and often reflect outdated security thinking on the part of the site — but they're real constraints you have to work around.

A fixed generator that always produces the same format won't help you here. If a site requires exactly 10 characters, alphanumeric only, you need to be able to generate exactly that — without falling back to something you invented yourself.

A generated password is strong. It's also completely unmemorable — which is the point. You were never supposed to memorize it.

This means you need somewhere to put it. Writing it on a sticky note defeats the purpose. Saving it in a plain text file on your desktop isn't much better.
